It has a similar smell to lemon balm and it makes a delicious tea. Easy to grow and has attractive bright green growth with furry leaves. Attractive blue/purple flowers in summer. Spreading habit. Perennial. 80cm.

Elderberry - Sambucus nigra

FOR A TASTE OF ELDERBERRY WINE.
Lovely tall sprawling shrub to about 2.5 m tall. The flowers are used to make cordial and champagne but if you can resist the flowers and let the berries form you have the makings for a lovely wine. The berries were also used in Europe to make a cough syrup, and the syrup is extremely soothing on your throat as well as a lovely taste. Likes to grow in the dark, untidy corner of your section. Is good for hiding an ugly fence or corner.

Elecampane - Inula helenuim

FOR COUGHS, COLDS AND ASTHMA.
Tall mamber of the daisy family. With a bright yellow, quite showy flower. This plant hibernates for winter, but we can always tell exactly what it is by the distinctive smell of the root. Smells just like horses! Root is used medicinally.

Short lived leafy perennial used for it's pungent flavour in Mexican cooking. Claimed to prevent flatulence caused by beans. It is antihelminthic, used to expel intestinal worms. Can self seed profusely.

Evening Primrose - Oenothera biennis

Large leaf and with a yellow spike flower. This plants seeds prolifically, so once you have it you will always have more coming up. Leaves for a flat plate like shape in the garden and are good for repressing some of the weeds. Not only a nice filler plant but the seeds are also used medicinally.

Bronze Fennel - Foeniculcum vulgare

FENNEL TEA COULD HELP
Fennel grows to 2 metres and is a graceful feture in any garden. All parts are edible and have a soft anise flavour. The tea was used traditionally to break up kidney stones, and to increase the flow of milk in nursing mothers. It is soft and easy on the digestive system, helpin ease colic and aiding in expelling worms. Fennel is an herb well worth researching for additional uses.

Florence Fennel - Foeniculum vulgare azoricum

THE TASTE OF ITALY
Also known as finocchio. An annual which has a stem that swells to a "bulb". Has a sweet anise taste. It is very popular in Italian cooking, and can be used cooked or raw in salads. A worthy vegetable/herb to put on your table. Is said to make the breath very sweet.

Feverfew - Chrysanthmum parthenium

Feverfew is best known for it's medicinal purposes, particularly as a headache herb and for rheumatism. It is very easy to grow in New Zealand. An aromatic bush with an abundance of white daisy-like flowers during spring and summer. It can be made into a tea, but it is usually necessary to add honey to sweeten it. Likes a sunny position, can tolerate wind but not salt spray. Not suitable for coastal regions. Perennial. 50cm.

Galangal - Alpinia galangal

SPECTACULAR THAI FLAVOURS
Galangal is used both in cooking and medicinally. It will no tolerate frosts but will flower in NZ. It produces a bright pink root that can be dried, stored and used for flavourings or to make teas or tinctures. Said to be antibacterial.

Ginger Myoga - Zingiber mioga

EDIBLE DELICACY.
This is a deliacy in Japan, one of their traditional vegetables. The tops die down in winter and the edible part is the new flower shoots that appear in spring. It is best grown in the shade as it sunburns badly in full sun. Grow to about 1.5m before it dies back in winter. In 1.5lt Pots

Goji Berry - Lycium barbarum

These grow fast and I have been told they deal well with the NZ climate. I have mine outside and as they lose their leaves they should be able to deal with a little frost. These plants are small, about 10 - 15 cm tall so I am still able to ship them in our boxes made for 6 plants. But put them in a big pot for the next 6 months and you will have a bush about 2m tall. I have been advised that topping them keeps them bushy, and they should fruit within 2 - 3 years

Golden Rod - Solidago canadensis

This is a dwarf goldenrod which looks great in the garden and is also used by herbalists.  Golden rod produces lovely bright yellow flowers in late summer. Prefers poor soils, and full sun or partial shade.. Winter dormant perennial. 60cm.

Gotu Kola - Centella asiatica

ALSO KNOWN AS PENNYWORT A SIGNIFICANT MEDICINAL HERB

Gotu kola is a really nice creeping, ground covering herb, Prefers to be in a shady, damp but very warm place where it has room to spread. Grows along the edges of rice paddies in India where it is used daily in small amounts as a vegetable. Very well known as a medicinal herb. Supposed to be great for skin conditions, memory and blood sugar problems, but is best used under the guidance of a registered herbalist. Perennial. 5cm.

Herb Robert - Geranium robertianum

BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM
Herb Robert is a little studied herb with loads of anicdotal stories of it's benefits. Said to be full of minerals, and a good source of germanium, which aids transport of oxygen to the cells. Dr. Otto Warburg, twice Nobel Prize winner, said in 1966, "The prime cause of cancer is lack of oxygenation of the cells". Many people with cancers have come to hear of Herb Robert. Lovely little self seeding short lived perennial.

Hops -Humulus lipulus

A CALMING EFFECT
As well as being used for making beer, hops is also used as a digestive aid. The flowers can be put inside an "hops pillow" and used as an aid for sleeping.
This is a big plant and can grow up to 7 meters. It is best contained along a wall and can climb along a trellis. It makes a stunning display when the flowers form in late summer. Cut it right back to hibernated for winter and it will start again next spring.

Horseradish - Armoracia rusticana

PUT THE FIRE IN YOUR LIFE
The root of this plant has little smell until grated. The chemical process of damaging the cells releases a pungent odour that will clear the nostrils. Use it as an accompaniment to fish and meat. Horseradish was, along with coriander, horehound, lettuce & nettle, one of the five bitter herbs eaten historically during the feast of the Passover.
Is said to be useful in clearing blocked sinuses and aiding to clear infection. It has shown to be antibiotic, against many bacteria. It has also been used to treat kidney stones and bladder infections.

Korean Mint - Agastache rugosa

QUENCH THE THIRST.
Tall plant with showy purple spikes of flowers. Use about 4 - 6 leaves to make a soft mint tea. Is a pleasent drink chilled on a hot summers day. The plant is a perennial but goes into a complete hibernation in winter. Returning from the root base again in spring. Does self seed but is not invasive. Makes a popular tea in the café.

Ladies Bedstraw - Galium verum

FLOWERS SMELL LIKE HONEY
This small staggly plant has a mass of flowers in summer that has the distinct scent of honey. Used for herbal pillows. It released the restful scent of newly mowed hay when dried. It was used to curdle milk and colour cheese.

Lad's Love - Artemisia abrotanum

Deciduous, perennial, related to wormwood & with a similar color. Lovely fluffy, silver foliage. Also known as Southernwood. The young leaves have a bitter lemon flavor and can be used in cakes and salads but definitely an acquired taste. A bitter herb believed to improve liver function and aid digestion.

Lavender Dwarf Munstead - Lavendula angustifolia 'Munstead'

This is a low growing lavender, which makes it great for hedging. Produces short spikes of purple-blue flowers in summer. Lavender oil is used quite frequently by herbalists, and it is quite well known that lavender promotes sleep. Perennial. 40cm. Only in PB2's

Lavender grosso is one of the most popular varieties for producing lavender oil. It is a very attractive plant, and rather large for a lavender. It will grow into a bush 1m x 1m then produce long flower stalks on top of that. It looks absolutely stunning planted in rows, and it flowers in December. Perennial.
